Before there was the world famous Bob Marley & The Wailers there existed a band known simply as The Wailers. At it's foundation were childhood friends Bunny Livingstone (far left), Bob Marley (in front) and Peter Tosh (middle). The Wailers as a trio had limitless talent and cut so many classic tracks together that few groups have been able to measure up since.
The Wailers formed in 1963 with their earliest work focused on the doo-wop and ska style of the day. Their sound eventually progressed through the late 60's and early 70's into rocksteady under the production of Lee Perry into what some consider the best work of their career. During this time the trio all shared lead vocals while also harmonizing on many other tracks, this allowed each member to showcase their very distinctive and recognizable vocal talents.
The Wailers eventually parted ways in 1974, during which time their popularity was increasing outside of Jamaica after completing tours of The United States and the UK. Both Peter and Bunny quit the group citing their differences at the solo focus and special treatment Bob had been receiving. Before the breakup The Wailers only released two official and amazing albums, 1972's Catch A Fire and 1973's Burnin'. After their departure Marley eventually became a household name via "Bob Marley & The Wailers" while using the female vocal trio of the I Three's for backup duties on subsequent albums
Because The Wailers had recorded for many different labels early in their career there is an abundance of material available on countless compilations. Unfortunately in the zest for revenue many of these labels have sold off and re-issued a lot of very poor quality material, including tracks that at the time were meant for demo and rehearsal purposes only, so do your research before you break the bank.
The tracks listed below are some of my favourite works of The Wailers as a band, as one entity. First up are two superb tracks from the Talkin' Blues compilation capturing sessions recorded live in 1973. Enjoy the groove, internet.
Bob Marley & The Wailers - Burnin' & Lootin
Bob Marley & The Wailers - Slave Driver
Bob Marley & The Wailers - Keep On Moving
Bob Marley & The Wailers - Pass It On
